History of Golu Devta

Golu Devta is known for giving justice, helping their devotees, and resolving their disputes. Hence, he is the God of Justice. Golu Devta has a rich history and is the incarnation of Gaur Bhairav (Shiva).

According to local belief, during the rule of the Katyuri dynasty’s king, Jhallurai had 07 queens, but none bore any children. Due to this, the king was distressed and worried about who would take care of his kingdom after him. Jhalurai always worshiped his Isht Dev and Kul Devta Bhairav. One day, Bhairav appeared before King Jhalurai and informed him that no other queen had the ability to bear his incarnation. Therefore, an incarnation will manifest as his son from his eighth queen.

King Jhalurai was out hunting one day when he became thirsty and ordered his troops to get water from a lake. After a while, he noticed that nobody was coming back, so he went to get some water for himself.

As he was about to drink, he noticed a woman standing nearby and asked her what had happened to his troops. She smiled and said, “This is my pond, and they must take permission.”

The king replied, “I am the king. I am thirsty. I want to drink water.”

The lady said, “If you are king, you must be powerful. So you have to give a test.”

Two buffaloes were fighting, so the lady asked the king to stop them. After numerous attempts, the king failed to complete the task, so the lady completed it on her own in seconds. The king was impressed and proposed to the lady, to which she replied, “I have five brothers, and to get married, he has to get permission from all of them,” referring to them as Panch Dev. Her brothers granted permission, and the couple later married. The Golu Devta mother’s name is Kalinka. So Golu Devta is also the nephew of Panch Dev.

After their marriage, Kalinka became pregnant, and other queens started feeling jealous. In their jealousy, they claimed that Kalinga had given birth to Silbatta (grinding stone) and swapped the newborn with grinding stone. Seeing the newborn, they grew enraged and blinded by anger. They put the child in a box and threw it into the Kali River. When the king and others heard that the queen had given birth to a grinding stone, it was hard to believe for everyone.

The newborn ended up in the hands of a fisherman, who found the baby inside the box in Gori River. That’s why he is also known as Goriya. The Fisherman raised the child, who grew up to be righteous and wise. At a young age Golu Devta started helping people, and one day he demanded his father a horse. As a fisherman, it was difficult for his father to buy a horse. So he made a wooden horse, and every time Golu Devta took the horse for watering.

As a child, Golu Devta used to have dreams of his kingdom. One day, finally, Golu Devta went and reached a place where all seven queens were available near the lake. He asked for some space so that he could water his horse. The queens replied, questioning how a wooden horse could drink water. Thinking the child was making fun of them, the queen ordered a soldier to arrest him and present him in front of the King.

When questioned by the King, Golu Devta replied, “If a woman can give birth to a grinding stone, then it is also possible for a wooden horse to drink water.” The king and all the other people were shocked, and then the King came to know everything and accepted him as his son.

Understanding the misdeeds of his queens, the king ordered them to be imprisoned. The child pleaded for their forgiveness, and upon growing up, he became the deity of justice, Kartikeya Golu, in the Golu temple, Champavat district.

After this, Golu Devta became so famous that other people would come up with their problems and ask for a resolution. Golu Devta would help them with swift and fair justice; every single person would get justice.

Golu Devta never slept thereafter. He started giving justice to everyone in need. He would travel to other places and provide justice.
