Girija or Garjiya Devi Temple is among one of the most visited and popular temples in Uttarakhand. The temple of Girija Devi is located in the middle of the Kosi River on the top of a huge rock.

The temple is also known as Garjiya as the temple is located near Garjiya village in Ramnagar, Uttarakhand, which is 275 km, from Delhi.

Girija Devi Temple is the shrine of Girija Devi which is believed to be the incarnation of Goddess Maa Parwati and believed to be there during Mahabharata and mentioned in Puranas.

The temple is visited by thousands of devotees from all over the world, people have a significant belief that Maa Garjiya is there for their devotees and to seek the blessings of Goddess Girija Devi people wait for their turn and then after darshan of Girija Devi, they continue their onward journey.

Girija Devi is the daughter of Giriraj the King of mountains. Every Year a fair is organised on the occasion of Karthik Poornima where thousands of locals and tourists from all over the place attend the Fair.

Girija Devi Temple is located near the famous tourist attractions of Uttarakhand Jim Corbett National Park.

History of Girija Devi Temple

The Holy Shrine Girija Devi Temple is situated atop a hill 100 feet high between the Kosi River in the Ramnagar district of Nainital, Uttarakhand. The temple of Mother Girija Devi, situated amidst the fast-flowing stream of the Kosi River, is a unique marvel. 

The temple’s presence in the stream from ancient times is considered to be the influence of divine power. It is not only a pilgrimage site for religiously inclined people but has also become a center of attraction for tourists from all over the country and abroad. 

Despite enduring the constant impact of the river for centuries, this sacred place has stood firm with the temple of Mother Girija on its head. 

This place is considered to be from the time of the Mahabharata. Maharaja Virat worshipped Mother Girija (Shakti) here, and Sage Kaushik also worshipped Mother Girija at this place, so the river is called Kaushiki in the Puranas. The ancient idol of Shri Lakshminarayan Ji of the Katiyuri dynasty of the 8th century BC is installed here. Visitors consider themselves fortunate to have a glimpse of it. 

Pandit Ramakrishna Pandey, a resident of Ranikhet (Biththad), came to this place in the year 1935 and started performing worship and rituals. Since then, his son, Shri Purnachandra Pandey, has been serving Mother Girija along with his family as a priest.

How to Reach Garjiya Devi Temple?

Girija Devi Temple is situated in the Ramnagar district of Uttarakhand which is at a distance of 275 Km from Delhi it is near the famous Jim Corbett National Park and is often referred to as the gateway to Kumaon to enter the Kumaon region Ramnagar is among one of them.

By Train 

There are direct trains from Delhi (DEL) to Ramnagar (RMR) which take around 5-6 Hours.

The train ticket can be booked online from the IRCTC online website it is always advised to book a ticket well in advance.

By Bus

Several bus services operate from Delhi to Uttarakhand, these services usually depart from major bus terminals in Delhi mainly from Anand Vihar ISBT. Online bus tickets can be booked from the Uttarakhand official transport website.
