History of Girija Devi Temple

The Holy Shrine Girija Devi Temple is situated atop a hill 100 feet high between the Kosi River in the Ramnagar district of Nainital, Uttarakhand. The temple of Mother Girija Devi, situated amidst the fast-flowing stream of the Kosi River, is a unique marvel. 

The temple’s presence in the stream from ancient times is considered to be the influence of divine power. It is not only a pilgrimage site for religiously inclined people but has also become a center of attraction for tourists from all over the country and abroad. 

Despite enduring the constant impact of the river for centuries, this sacred place has stood firm with the temple of Mother Girija on its head. 

This place is considered to be from the time of the Mahabharata. Maharaja Virat worshipped Mother Girija (Shakti) here, and Sage Kaushik also worshipped Mother Girija at this place, so the river is called Kaushiki in the Puranas. The ancient idol of Shri Lakshminarayan Ji of the Katiyuri dynasty of the 8th century BC is installed here. Visitors consider themselves fortunate to have a glimpse of it. 

Pandit Ramakrishna Pandey, a resident of Ranikhet (Biththad), came to this place in the year 1935 and started performing worship and rituals. Since then, his son, Shri Purnachandra Pandey, has been serving Mother Girija along with his family as a priest.

How to Reach Garjiya Devi Temple?

Girija Devi Temple is situated in the Ramnagar district of Uttarakhand which is at a distance of 275 Km from Delhi it is near the famous Jim Corbett National Park and is often referred to as the gateway to Kumaon to enter the Kumaon region Ramnagar is among one of them.

There are direct trains from Delhi (DEL) to Ramnagar (RMR) which take around 5-6 Hours.
